2024 SPLAT Camp!

SPLAT (Study, Play, Learn, and Talk) is a six-week summer program that brings learning, connection, and community to life for local students. Designed to support children living in two mobile home communities within the Lake Orion Community Schools district, SPLAT removes barriers that have historically prevented some students from participating in traditional summer school programs.

Each day begins with academic instruction focused on strengthening reading, math, and other core skills to help reduce summer learning loss. In the afternoons, students enjoy classic camp-style activities that promote teamwork, cooperative play, and problem-solving. Students also participate in weekly field trips to explore fun local destinations, giving them opportunities to experience the broader community.

Beyond academics and activities, one of SPLAT’s greatest strengths is relationship-building. The program is staffed by educators from the students’ home schools, allowing students to build strong, trusting relationships with teachers and staff before the school year begins. These connections help strengthen partnerships between families, schools, and the community.

SPLAT is offered free of charge to participating families and includes daily breakfast and lunch for students. The program is made possible through generous donations, fundraising efforts, and strong community partnerships. Lake Orion Community Schools supports SPLAT with technology, curriculum access, and school supplies, while the mobile home communities host the program in their community centers, creating welcoming spaces for learning and play. Local businesses and organizations also contribute through donations for meals, student t-shirts, field trips, and program activities.

There are proven results from SPLAT. Students show reduced summer learning loss, academic growth, stronger social-emotional skills, improved problem-solving abilities, and fewer behavior-related challenges during the school year.

By combining academic support, engaging activities, and meaningful relationships, SPLAT helps ensure that students return to school confident, connected, and ready to learn—while strengthening the bonds between families, schools, and the Lake Orion community.
